The physiological functions of mesh architecture are as follows:

Mesh architecture is a crisscross neural network structure scattered between the medulla oblongata and hypothalamus. Its function is related to maintaining the state of consciousness, attention and cognition of the brain. There are one million neurons in mesh architecture. These neurons form many nuclei, which are connected with each other by short axons, and form the ascending and descending reticular systems.

The ascending reticular system is a nonspecific projection system. After the nerve impulses from the body or internal organs enter into the mesh architecture through the collateral branches of the afferent nerves, they lose their original characteristics and diffuse to the common areas of the cerebral cortex through the ascending projection system, arousing and maintaining the excitement of the cerebral cortex and making it in a state of awakening. The excitation of the cerebral cortex caused by the mesh architecture is separated from the afferent impulses through the specific neural pathways, and then a specific perception is produced. The efferent impulses from the cerebral cortex, basal ganglia, thalamus and cerebellum enter the mesh architecture and reach the spinal cord via the descending reticular system, participating in the regulation of body movement and visceral activities. It is found that the ascending and descending reticular systems contain two opposite systems of arousal and inhibition respectively.
